DATE A GUY WHO PLAYS SPORTS

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”
- Heywood Broun (1888 - 1939)

This is for all the men who play sports, athlete or not, as long as you play passionately.
This if for all the women who like passionate sports players, whether athletes or not.

Date a guy who plays sports. Date a guy who starts his morning by training hard and sacrificing hours of sleep so he can train and be better in his craft. He knows the value of hard work and discipline. He’s been training since he was ten and yet he feels he will never be good enough.

Find a guy who plays sports. He’s that guy who goes to Nike or Adidas once you get in the mall. He’ll know exactly where Olympic Village is or where the sports goods stores are but will probably forget where the comfort room is, unless of course it’s near a sports store. He will be that guy who comes to class in his trainers because he just came from training. He’ll fall asleep in your class once in a while because he woke up at 5:00 AM to jog and practice, maybe he’ll fall asleep most of the time.

He’s the guy who walks with an air of confidence when he’s with his team but may seem distant when he’s alone. He’s not really a jerk but can’t be soft in public; it just doesn’t work that way.

Date a guy who plays sports because you’ll appreciate his sweetness when you’re together. You don’t have to ask him ask him to carry your tote bag, even though it’s pink, furry and can be traded for a disco ball because he will, voluntarily. You’ll realize how much he really cares for you and how much of a softie he really is, just not in front of the team.

It’s difficult to date a guy who plays sports, especially if he’s an athlete. There will be times when you feel like he’s taken you for granted, especially during the season. He’ll be spending most of his time training or playing games. You’ll have to schedule your dates based on his training and game schedule. He may look tired or unresponsive when you see him, sometimes he might even ask if he can just stay at home, but don’t get mad. It’s just that he needs to rest too.

Be friends with his teammates. That way, you’ll understand why he likes spending so much time with them. He’ll appreciate how you are making an effort to get to know his world and his friends. He’ll love how you’re not the type of girl who has to compete with his teammates for time and attention. Don’t be that control freak who hides his racket or cuts his string so he can’t play tennis. That’s just wrong.

Argue with him on sports. Have bets on who will be the NBA Conference Finals Champion. You don’t always have to see eye-to-eye. Tell him that LBJ chokes or that the Lakers will always be better than the Celtics. Don’t try to change his mind on whose team he should be in though. His team will always be the best.

Ask him about soccer. He’ll be more than willing to tell you why Spain has two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona. He’ll find it cute that you try to love his sport…and tell you that it’s football, not soccer.

Date a guy who plays sports because he knows that like in all sports, teamwork is important. He knows that you and him are a team and in order to make the relationship a success, you have to work together. He knows that rules should be followed both in and out of the playing field.

Date a guy who plays sports because he likes a healthy competition. He will never take you for granted because he knows that there are other guys around. But he also knows that there are other girls, so take care of him. You will feel jealous because of all the girls around him. But look at the bright side, he’s with you and that’s all that matters.

Date a guy who plays sports because you know he can and will protect you. The hours spent in the gym are not useless and those biceps are not just for show. He can and will use them if he needs to.

Marry a guy who plays sports. Imagine Saturdays spent taking the kids to football practice or summers in sports camp. How you will always have a good time watching the Wimbledon finals, and going over the Sampras - Agassi, and Federer - Nadal era. Or the stories you will tell your children how their dad won the championship because of a fade-away three pointer…with two seconds left on the clock.

Marry a guy who plays sports. Imagine the endurance…

…when he’s chasing after the kids in your lawn. :)

Spend your life with a guy who plays sports. He’ll understand that life is a game. You win some, you lose some. Failure is a part of life but that shouldn’t stop you to become better. He’ll work hard because he knows that nothing comes easy. There will be hurdles along the way but as long as he knows there’s a chance of winning, he’ll go for it.

Grow old with a man who plays sports. You deserve someone who will fight the game for you and with you. He may not be able to sing or write love songs. He may not be as good with words as he is in sports. He may not paint you a portrait of his love or he might fail to tell you everyday that he loves you, but at the end of the everything, when all battles have been fought, he’ll tell you a simple line paramount to all the other wordy poems out there:

“I did my best and won the game for you.”

As inspired by the following wonderful works of literature: Date a Girl who Reads by Rosemari Urquico and Catch a man who reads by Carlo Hernandez Andrion

Date a Guy Who Plays Sports was written by Alyanna Gabrielle B. Morales and edited by Raiza Marie C. Buela. Both are 21 year old sports enthusiasts, occasional writers, and voracious readers from the University of the Philippines (but whose sports hearts will always belong to the Green Archers).

The author is currently dating a guy who plays sports and the editor is looking for either a guy who plays sports or waiting to catch a man who reads. Applicants are welcome. Please refer to Date a Girl who Read’s last sentence. To quote: Or better yet, date a girl who writes.
